As published by IGIHE.COM this Thursday, June 13, 2019, the DRC by its President has formally requested membership in the EAC, showing the interest of this country to benefit from the space that this organization offers, especially the development of trade between its member countries.
In this letter from the President of the DRC His Excellency Mr. Félix Tshisekedi Tshilombo to his Rwandan counterpart His Excellency Mr. Paul Kagame, the Chairperson of EAC this year, he announces that after the dialogues between the two Heads of State in Kigali, then in Kinshasa about the drive of his country to join the EAC, he resolves to ask it officially.
President Tshisekedi visited Rwanda in March while President Kagame was in Kinshasa last month, where he attended the funeral of Tshisekedi’s father, late Etienne Tshisekedi who was Prime Minister of this country under the reign of Mobutu.
He emphasizes that “this application for membership is based on business activities in continuous expansion between traders from DRC and those of EAC member countries “.
“It would be my great pleasure if you present from me to the Heads of State of member countries my desire to join them to work together in the fight for the development of our countries and to build an umbrella of this region of Africa.”
The DRC’s application for membership comes after Somalia’s application which is still under review, and if approved will bring the number of member countries to 7 after Burundi, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan and Tanzania.
